Piejura Project

Piejura Project

LOCATION Nica Municipality, Latvia
PROJECT TYPE Biogas
LAND COVERAGE n/a sqm
NOMINAL POWER 2.4MW
PROJECT STATUS Operational Since September 2012

Overview

The biogas plant is situated in the rural Nica Municipality of Liepaja Prefecture and became operational in September 2012. The Piejura project generates methane gas through anaerobic digestion or fermentation of biodegradable materials, including crops specifically grown for energy production and various organic by-products. This gas is then used to produce electricity, which is sold to the national grid. Additionally, residual heat from the Piejura Energy facility is purchased by a local industrial concern for process and ambient heating. The by-products are returned to the agricultural cycle as fertilizer to enhance soil at nearby farms.
